(as part of Izabella Gustowska exhibition In stealthy flight I pursued her) Joe Alex Cichym ścigałam go lotem (pl) Subsequent publication in our series Book of the Week in WRO Media Library is Joe Alex’s ( Maciej Słomczyńskie) Cichym ścigałam go lotem, titled and with a motto from Aeschylus’s Eumenides: The winged bright dart that from my golden string Speeds hissing as a snake,-lest, pierced and thrilled With agony, thou shouldst spew forth again Black frothy heart’s-blood, drawn from mortal men Aeschylus, Eumenides.
The title of an exhibition by Izabella Gustowska In stealthy flight I pursued her currently presented in WRO directly refers to the title of a cult book of the ‘60s in Poland: Cichym ścigałam go lotem by Joe Alex, but modifies it in one significant detail. Instead of a male “him” she uses female “her”, because as Gustowska explains, in her artwork she is not pursuing men with the yearn for vengeance (as the Eumenides did) but rather is questing for biographies of other women. What links both artists is a subtle play of nuances and details, focusing on multilayered mechanisms of intrigue construction. In Alex’s book one can find meticulous descriptions of the analytical methods of mystery solving, in Gustowska’s exhibition careful collection of traces and notations both in the form of text and video: “she saw an unknown woman jump from a cliff on a volcanic island (and her camera captured the moment)”

As part of the Zbigniew Rybczyński and Gábor Bódy exhibition currently shown in Berlin’s Akademie der Künste organized by WRO Art Center, C3 in Budapest and the Akademie, we recommend two publications:
Just released State of Images. The Media Pioneers Zbigniew Rybczyński and Gábor Bódy, edited by two outstanding art and media theoreticians and historians – Siegfried Zielinski and Peter Weibel. According to Zielinski over the last century, we have grown accustomed to the idea that the first techno-avant-garde art came from Western Europe and North America. This belief is not true. Almost all the foundations for developing the worlds of electronic images and sounds were discovered and invented in the East. The West and the North appropriated the knowledge and concepts and brought them to production readiness. This does not count as inventing new worlds.
And A Treatise on the Visual Image, a catalogue of Rybczyński’s monographic exhibition from 2009 including full text of his Treatise along with unique and never before published: sketches, drawings, calculations and graphs all showing his ongoing quest for the new image synthesis that combines photographic realism of today’s media with the depth of reality representation distinctive of Renaissance masters.

Second publication in our new series Book of the Week in WRO Media Library is a catalogue from the three-part exhibition held in 2009-10 in Porto (Portugal) that presented collection of the Serralves Foundation. Serralves 2009. The Collection comprises of almost 300 pages of artwork reproductions by such contemporary artists as: Luc Tuymans, Ana Mendieta, Christian Boltanski, Martha Rosler, Richard Serra, Mirosław Bałka and Robert Rauschenberg, together with less known Portuguese and South Americans: Rui Toscano, Pedro Tudela, Julião Sermento and Artur Barrio.
The publication reveals a wealth and diversity of the Collection initiated in 1989 as the first solely dedicated to the contemporary art in Portugal.In addition, Serralves Foundation and WRO Art Center work together as part of the DCA project aimed at digitising and online publication in Europeana portal of 26,921 high resolution reproductions of artworks ranging from sculpture to media art.
